Lama Lekshe is a Tibetan Buddhist Lama from the Kagyu and Nyingma lineages. Based in Upstate New York, Lama Lekshe’s journey has been one of profound transformation, inspired by the story of the Monkey King, which deepened his interest in the Buddhist path.
Born in Romania to a Hungarian family, Lama Lekshe escaped his homeland in 1989, just six months before the fall of the dictatorship. He spent the next decade as a refugee across Europe and the Eastern Bloc, an experience of displacement and suffering that became the foundation for his deep understanding of the Buddhist path. In 1991, he made his way to the United States, landing in Alaska, where he worked on fishing boats. It was there, amid life’s unpredictability, that he learned firsthand about karma and suffering, lessons that would shape his meditative practice and inspire his pursuit of wisdom.
Like the Monkey King, whose strength was meaningless without wisdom and discipline, Lama Lekshe realized that meditation must be transformative, not just a source of comfort. His quest for spiritual truth led him on a challenging pilgrimage. In the early 1990s, before the age of the internet, and traveling on refugee documents, he embarked on a journey to India. He eventually found himself in Dharamsala, where he immersed himself in the teachings of the Dharma. In time, he met his guru, a Tibetan Lama, under whose guidance he spent seven years in retreat.
Emerging from retreat in 2007, Lama Lekshe embodied the discipline and enlightenment of a true spiritual warrior. His teachings remind us that our journeys, no matter how chaotic, can lead to deep transformation when faced with patience, wisdom, and compassion.
